How Madison turns on, tunes in, and logs on

August 27, 2008

The choices are pretty standard when it comes to telecom services in the Madison area.

For TV, it's satellite, cable, and over-the-air broadcast, with AT&T planning to offer its U-verse service before the end of the year.

The one local distinction between the major satellite providers will matter to some: DirecTV offers the local network affiliate stations in high definition while DISH Network doesn't have them in HD yet, but plans to add them before the end of the year.

Charter Communications is the area's dominant cable provider. Sports fans should know that Charter does not have carriage deals with Big Ten Network (though a deal was imminent as of press time) and NFL Network, both of which are carried by DirecTV and DISH Network.

U-verse, which is delivered over AT&T's fiber and copper phone lines, also has deals with BTN and NFL Network.

High-speed Internet choices include Charter's cable Internet and DSL from phone companies AT&T, Verizon and TDS. AT&T serves much of the Madison area. Verizon serves several area communities, including Oregon, Sun Prairie and Cambridge, among others. TDS' service area includes Middleton, Verona, Waunakee, and portions of the far west wide of Madison.

Wireless high-speed Internet service also is available locally. Free, untethered surfing is available at local libraries, and numerous coffee shops, bars and restaurants.
