Fancy picnic fans, rejoice.

Sucre, the stylish European-style patisserie on the Capitol Square best known for elegant desserts and pastries, has a summer menu with lovely choices for Concert on the Square picnics.

All sandwiches are $6.75 and are served on a variety of breads baked in-house daily. One example is a blue cheese and pear combination, served on Sucre's Italian seasoned focaccia. It's a match made in sandwich heaven.

Other harmonious combinations include a sandwich with Priskie's beef salami and Wisconsin Cheddar served on French peasant bread, and a turkey sandwich served with spinach and cranberry horseradish on oatmeal bread. The sandwiches are substantial enough to feed a single diner, or a pair of diners with more delicate appetites.

"A sandwich is such a lovely, cool thing to pick up for a summer supper," said Punky Egan, Sucre's chef, owner and master baker, who also serves as the director of MATC's baking program.

Sandwiches to go are precisely wrapped, French style, in waxed paper and tied with a string. Popped in Sucre's signature orange vellum bag, it makes a pretty package.

For those disinclined to brave mosquitoes as they eat, Sucre can seat about 40 diners inside. There's also cafe seating al fresco for about 20 more diners. It's a 30-second walk to the concert grounds.

In addition to the lunch menu and coffee, tea, pastries and other desserts, there is an impressive array of wine, available both in half and whole bottles. Sucre also provides catering, has wine flights and is open for late night sweets.
